2013 Rapids Player Rating & Review - German Mera

One very, very bad performance tainted an otherwise half-decent season for German Mera.

USA TODAY Sports

As we do every year, through the month of December we'll be doing ratings and reviews of every player who played even a slightly significant amount of minutes for the Colorado Rapids in 2013. We'll start from the goalkeepers and move our way up to the forwards. Today, we'll cover German Mera.

Name: German Mera
Number: 33
Appearances:
Stats: None, really

I feel like German Mera got a bad rap from Rapids fans by the time the year was over. When he was on the field for the majority of the season, he was a very quiet player, doing nothing particularly sparkly but not making all that many mistakes, either. He put in a good 90 minutes in the RMC final against Real Salt Lake, had some solid performances as a member of the backline to add size late in a few games, and generally did everything Oscar Pareja asked him to.

Unfortunately, he had a howler against the Seattle Sounders, and last impressions tend to be the ones that people remember most. (It's worth noting that most young players tend to struggle when asked to play 90 minutes in a playoff situation after not getting a start in over two months.) It's unfortunate for the 23-year-old, but next year will probably be more fruitful overall. With his loan over, Colorado is looking to bring him back, and with Diego Calderon he'll probably have a good chance to get more minutes on the team next year.
