This week, the Colorado Rapids made two roster moves, signing Braian Galván to a three-year contract extension and adding Anthony Markanich on a one-year deal.
Galván’s new deal will run through the 2024 season with an option for the following year. The 21-year-old came to Colorado midway through 2020 on a free transfer from Club Atlético Colón. The Argentine winger has made 35 appearances across all competitions for Colorado, netting three goals and adding four assists in that span. He’s out for the season due to an ACL tear, which was surgically repaired last month.
“Braian has quickly developed into a key member of our team during his time with the club,” Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager Pádraig Smith said in a news release, “His recent injury was a real blow, as he was coming off a positive 2021 season in which he demonstrated his keen eye for goal and versatility on both wings, as well as having an exceptional start to this preseason. Despite this injury setback, we have full faith in his ability to bounce back stronger than before and continue his upward trajectory.”
Meanwhile, Markanich, 22, was selected No. 26 in this year’s MLS SuperDraft. He spent four years at Northern Illinois University, becoming a three-time First-Team All-MAC honoree. His collegiate stint included 67 appearances at left back, knocking in 17 goals and helping on 24.
“Anthony had an excellent preseason with our group and demonstrated the qualities and potential that led us to select him in the SuperDraft,” said Smith. “We’re delighted to extend him a contract and officially welcome him to the club.”
Markanich will add some depth to the left back spot that has been a little light since Sam Vines left.
Galván seems to be a future star of the club, taking over as the young, exciting piece—alongside Max—once he recovers.
The Rapids’ home opener is Saturday.
