The Colorado Rapids missed midfielder Younes Namli with knee issues, as well as forward Jonathan Lewis on the night, but that didn’t seem to deter a quick start by Colorado as the Burgundy Boys brought good pressure moving the ball into Houston’s final third early and often.
Forward Diego Rubio forced Houston Dynamo ‘keeper Marko Maric into an 11th-minute diving save. A great chance for the Rapids in the 14th minute came off the foot of Jack Price’s free kick as Cole Bassett went airborne for a driving header at the 6-yard-box but again, the save was made.
In the 29th minute, Colorado struck from a well-played sequence off a long ball from William Yarbrough to Michael Barrios sprinting down the right sideline. His cutback on the endline to the top of the box found a wide-open streaking Sam Vines who hammered it under the upper right corner for the 1-0 lead.
Colorado found joy again before halftime as Barrios provided a great lofted cross to Rubio at the 6-yard-box for his glancing header inside the far left post and the 2-0 lead 36 minutes in.
However, a low Houston cross in the 40th minute just past Auston Trusty and Vines fell to Christian Ramirez at the edge of the box. His low ball to the far left post snuck past Yarbrough’s right to bring the Dynamo back to 2-1.
A hustling play by Bassett just two minutes later gave the Rapids a two-goal lead once again though, as his pressure on Maric paid off. The Houston ‘keeper forced his clearance directly off Bassett’s boot and into the goal for Colorado’s third strike of the half.
The second half saw Houston try to push numbers forward, but Colorado was able to continue to carry possession and hold the Dynamo back in their half without much trouble. A Bassett cross across the goalmouth in the 62nd minute missed the foot of Andre Shinyashiki by inches, but the Rapids were able to see out the remainder of the match not having to stress much while controlling the play throughout in the 3-1 win.
