That’s it, folks. The Colorado Rapids have finished the 2021 campaign with a bang, destroying the Los Angeles Football Club 5-2 in front of a 16,000+ fans at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The Burgundy Boys looked strong from the start, taking advantage of LAFC with every opportunity. William Yarbrough came up with a massive save against LA’s only shot on goal in the first half, while the Rapids got off four shots on goal on the other half, two of which found the back of the net.
Jonathan Lewis and Kellyn Acosta almost connected twice in the first 45, but this incredible pass and fantastic first goal kicked scoring off in the 18th minute.
And of course, no Rapids win is complete without a set-piece goal à la Jack Price. LA goalkeeper Jamal Blackman punched the ball right to Collen Warner, who then got his first goal in burgundy and gave Colorado the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Jonathan Lewis had a great game, adding one more goal before subbing out.
Unfortunately, there was some confusing around the subbing so the Rapids played down a man for a couple of minutes and LAFC forward Chicho Arango put the visiting side on the board, stealing a clean sheet from Yarbrough and the Rapids defense..
Shortly after in the 56th minute, Lewis and Price were subbed out for Cole Bassett and Michael Barrios came into the game.
And finally, 20-year-old Bassett snapped his frustrating streak of hitting the post game after game and found the back of the net to make it 4-1 with just under 30 minutes left on Decision Day.
In the 71st minute, LAFC’s Brian Rodriguez took a low and hard shot near-post and while Yarbrough got a hand on it, the ball rolled up and over, popping into the back of the net to make it 4-2.
Still, more goals were on the way. Dominique Badji subbed in and two minutes later, made it 5-2. Incredible.
This was by far one of the best games the Rapids have played all year. They’re heading into the playoffs with some momentum and we should all be very excited for what the future holds.
