Cole Bassett and Jonathan Lewis scored a goal apiece as the Colorado Rapids beat LA Galaxy 2-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday night.

Each team had glimmers of hope in the first half, but the it took the Rapids nearly 20 minutes just to get their first shot on goal. Colorado did a great job of getting back and defending the Galaxy counter, with Lalas Abubakar and Keegan Rosenberry shutting down LA’s Cristian Pavon. Kellyn Acosta was super active in the midfield and Younes Namli dribbled in for a shot of his own, but there just wasn’t much happening in the final third.

But in the 40th minute, Namli switched the field with a long ball over to Sam Vines, who then crossed a beautiful ball into the box. Andre Shinyashiki attempted to head it but missed, and Cole Bassett was right there to volley it past Galaxy goalkeeper David Bingham.

In the second half, Jonathan dos Santos and Chicharito came into the game in the 54th minute for Los Angeles. Both had been getting limited playing time due to injury. Chicharito played 33 minutes against the San Jose Earthquakes on September 13th, his first since the MLS is Back Tournament.

In the 65th minute, Jonathan Lewis hit the post and Andre Shinyashiki’s follow-up was saved by Bingham.

The tempo of the game increased and LA had some dangerous looks but weren’t able to find the back of the net. In the 75th minute, defender Julian Araujo was shown his second yellow and the Galaxy went down to 10 men for the rest of the game.

Three minutes later, Shinyashiki sent a through ball towards the endline to Braian Galvan. Galvan crossed it in and while Bingham got a finger on it, the ball got through to Jonathan Lewis, who easily scored his fourth goal of 2020. After a VAR review and head referee Ted Unkel taking a look on the field, the Rapids were awarded the goal and went up 2-0.

At the final whistle, the Rapids got their second win in three games and moved up to 6th place in the Western Conference.
