U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Greg Berhalter announced his 22-player roster for the upcoming December camp and three Colorado Rapids players made the list: Kellyn Acosta, Cole Bassett, and Sam Vines. Out of the 12 MLS clubs that are represented, the Rapids and LA Galaxy have the most players, with three each.
“Since returning to the field, the focus has been on continuing to build on our foundation and preparing the team for important competitions in 2021,” Berhalter said. “We have utilized these opportunities to work with our core group while evaluating young talent in an effort to strengthen our overall player pool.”
Fifteen players are eligible for the 2021 Summer Olympics, including Cole Bassett and Sam Vines. Bassett is looking for his first cap, while this is Vines’ second call-up. Vines became the first Rapids Homegrown and Rapids Development Academy player to start a match for the USMNT when he started against Costa Rica on February 1, 2020.
Kellyn Acosta has 23 senior team caps with two goals and will make his first USMNT camp appearance since January 2019.
The camp culminates with a friendly against El Salvador on December 9 at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The match is set for 5:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on an ESPN Network, UniMás, and TUDN. The USMNT is 17-1-5 all-time against El Salvador and it will be the first friendly between the two sides in more than 10 years.
“Playing against El Salvador gives us an opportunity to face a Concacaf opponent that we haven’t seen yet and will be a valuable experience. We want to build on this year’s work while continuing to evaluate the player pool as we head into a busy 2021,” said Berhalter.
