On Wednesday, U.S. Soccer released the schedule for the First Round of the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. In the First Round, there are 38 Open Division Teams which include 13 local qualifiers, 14 National Premiere Soccer League clubs, and 11 USL League Two squads. This is the 107th edition of the Open Cup and will feature 19 games across 14 states during March 24-25.
Colorado’s own FC Harpos out of Boulder will host in the First Round.
We are honored to host Crossfire Redmond NPSL in Colorado on Wednesday, March 25. It’s going to be a proper battle!! @opencup @usopencup @FCBoulder @Burgundywave LFG ⚽️ #brotherscharacterexcellence#soccerforlife #usoc2020 https://t.co/W9GmfgP1dF— FC Boulder Harpos (@HarposFC) January 22, 2020
That’s right, right here in Colorado on Wednesday, March 25th! As they noted in another tweet, they played three qualifying games and so far have 12 goals for, zero against! The game will be held at 7 p.m. on the 25th at Metropolitan State in Denver.
In an interesting change from previous years, US Soccer will require 11 MLS clubs to enter into the competition into the third round (rather than the fourth round in previous years). The next two divisons will enter in the second round this year.
The remaining 12 MLS teams (including the entrants in the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League) as well as the next top four teams from each conference will enter the Round of the 32 (formerly known as the Fourth Round).
Thus, the Colorado Rapids will enter into the Open Cup in the Third Round. The last few years have been a great challenge—the last of which was a loss in the Fourth Round (their first game) against New Mexico United, losing on penalties.
Even so, the Open Cup always proves to be entertaining. Here’s hoping a Colorado club secures some hardware this year!
