Qualifiers for the 2020 U.S. Open Cup kick-off in Colorado this weekend with a match-up between two local favorites, FC Denver and Harpos FC (now FC Boulder Harpos).
Eighty of the 88 amateur clubs across the country play this weekend, while the other eight teams earned first-round byes and will begin qualification in October. According to the USOC website, “byes were determined by either geographical considerations (two clubs), the result of being randomly selected (five teams), or due to the ineligibility of an opponent (one team) after Izee Auto FC recently withdrew from the Maryland Major Soccer League prior to the start of the fall season.”
It hasn’t yet been determined how many qualifying rounds there will be. The USOC committee will announce that in January of 2020, after the professional team entry deadline on Dec. 17, 2019. For now, they project at least three or four rounds.
FC Denver is the only amateur soccer team in Colorado to qualify for the Open Cup in the last two years. Harpos made it to the second round in 2015 and 2016, losing to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks both years.
These are two of the best amateur teams in Colorado and it’s free to attend, so come show your support for a couple of local soccer teams! (It’s not like we can watch the Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City match anyway.)
