Game Preview: Colorado Rapids vs Montreal Impact

MLS: Colorado Rapids at Montreal Impact Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids host the Montreal Impact tonight at Dick’s Sporting Good Park, where the pelts of prairie dogs are plague-ridden for the couriers de bois. The Impact come to Colorado in search of their second win in a row after beating Philadelphia 4-0 last Saturday. Often called the Jekyll & Hyde of MLS, the Impact’s form is much like an irregular heartbeat and they just can’t seem to find consistency. Montreal (10-11-3) are the only team in the league above the playoff line with more losses than wins.

But when it comes down to it, the Impact are nothing to joke about. Of their 31 goals for, the leading scorer only has seven, meaning they have multiple threats. Ignacio Piatti is still playmaking, Maximiliano Urruti (a name that may sound familiar from his days in Dallas) may have just one goal but leads the team with six assists, Saphir Taider is the Impact’s leading scorer and also has four assists, and right behind him is Orji Okwonkwo with six goals. Overwhelmed yet? That’s four guys who are scary at what they do—and let’s not forget Lassi Lappalainen, who bagged a brace in his debut last weekend.

With the number of threats that Montreal has, the Rapids will ideally play “Pablo ball” where the defense tightens up, possession becomes key, and before you know it, 90 minutes have gone by without many goals. Montreal is a team with more goals scored on them than they’ve scored, yet they seem to find ways to win.

If the Burgundy Boys want any chance at three points tonight, they need to come out like they did against Minnesota, while keeping their form like they did against LAFC.
