The Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes met just two weeks ago in Northern California, a game in which the Quakes took all three points by beating the Rapids 3-1. Tonight, San Jose traveled to Colorado and were the ones going home empty-handed.
In the first half, the Rapids were saved a couple of times by the post. The first time was four minutes into the game when Chris Wondolowski hit the post and the ball rolled right to Clint Irwin. Sixteen minutes later, Judson hit the same post on a blast from 25 yards out, it rebounded off the post and San Jose took another shot that rocketed over.
Sam Nicholson had a great opportunity shortly after, but it was barely wide and hit the side netting.
Most of the first half was San Jose pressing and controlling the game, but as the half was winding down, Kellyn Acosta took a strike to the far post. San Jose keeper Daniel Vega got a hand on it but the ball rolled into the back of the net to put the ‘Pids up 1-0 in the 45th minute.
The Rapids came out with a bit more energy in the second half, but the Quakes got on the board to tie it up 1-1 in the 62nd minute.
In the 73rd minute, Acosta went down in the box but nothing was called. Diego Rubio responded with his 7th goal of the season and 3rd goal in three games to put the Rapids back up 2-1.
Jack Price picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute, which means he’ll miss next week on accumulation.
There were five minutes of stoppage time added on and at the final whistle, the Rapids got all three points.
