The Colorado Rapids traveled to BC Place this weekend for a re-match with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The two teams just met back in May in Conor Casey’s first game as interim head coach, and the Rapids lost 2-3. Notably missing from the Burgundy Boys’ line-up was midfielder Jack Price, a late scratch with a hip injury. For the other side, Colorado faced Zac MacMath in goal.
It looked like the Rapids were going to get all three points tonight, but a lucky free kick for Vancouver in the 80th minute tied it up. While Colorado kept their unbeaten streak alive, it feels like they lost two points.
First Half
Diego Rubio put Colorado on the board in just the 8th minute off a corner kick. The Chilean hung out by the far post and tapped the ball in.
Both teams had opportunities in the following minutes, but both sides had chances thwarted by offside calls. In the 22nd minute, Andre Shinyashiki found himself in the right place at the right time to tap in his fourth goal of the season.
Vancouver responded with a couple of shots on their own, but Tim Howard was able to make the saves and keep the clean sheet.
In the first minute of stoppage time, Rubio had some contact with Ali Adnan in the box and the referee awarded Vancouver a penalty kick.
Fredy Montero put the penalty away for a score of 2-1 going into the half.
Second Half
Conor Casey made his first sub of the night in the 77th minute, bringing in Sebastian Anderson for Shinyashiki, who indicated that he may need a sub a couple of minutes before.
Three minutes later, Vancouver was given a free kick just outside the 18-yard-box. Yordy Reyna took the kick, split it between the Rapids wall, and got a lucky bounce on the inside of the post. The ball ricocheted behind Howard and went in on the opposite side of the net to tie the game 2-2.

Kei Kamara went down with what may have been a head injury but he stayed in the game. He went down again a few minutes later but still stayed in the game.
In the first minute of stoppage time, Adnan hit the side netting, and then Vancouver had another dangerous free kick about 25 yards out, but it soared over the crossbar.
Also of note: Kellyn Acosta earned a yellow card in stoppage time, which means he’ll miss the next game due to yellow card accumulation.
At the final whistle, the Rapids earned a point and continue their unbeaten run.
