Can the Rapids get three points today?

MLS: Atlanta United FC at Colorado Rapids Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids wrap up the month of April away as they face Atlanta United this afternoon with a 4 p.m. MT kickoff. There is little to discuss when it comes to the overall record between these two teams: having played just twice since ATLUD joined MLS in 2017, the Rapids lost both times.

This year is different though, as Atlanta has yet to win at home and are 1-3-2 overall to start out the 2019 campaign. Head coach Tata Martino left the club after lifting the MLS Cup, so now Frank de Boer takes the reins. So far, it has been a bit of a struggle without playmaker Miguel Almiron, who went to Newcastle in the offseason. United did add Pity Martinez, who was voted best South American player in 2018, but he hasn’t been able to adjust quite yet.

The Rapids will have a new look in the midfield this afternoon without Jack Price, who was shown a red card in the 88th minute against the Chicago Fire last weekend. Kellyn Acosta is also listed as questionable with a hamstring concern, so there is a chance the midfield may have a fresh face or two.

At this point, the key for the Rapids to earn their first three points of the season is to throw the playbook out the bus window on the way to the stadium this afternoon. Neither team can figure out their midfield, which means a lot of second balls, bad passes, and miscues are bound to happen. A good coach will take the first 45 minutes to calculate a response to the next 45 minutes and be able to come out on top; something Rapids fans have seen glimpses of.
