Major League Soccer announced the home openers for the 2020 season today and the Colorado Rapids will host Orlando City SC on Saturday, March 7th at 7 p.m. MT. Historically, the Rapids play well in their home opener, with an all-time record of 14-3-7 and a six-game unbeaten run in recent years. Tickets aren’t available yet, but you can get on a pre-sale Priority List here.
When these two teams faced each other last, the Rapids lost a hard-fought game 4-3 in Orlando. There was an hour-plus lightning delay and plenty of drama. In the 74th minute, Nani and Kellyn Acosta got into a scuffle because the Portuguese player thought he had been taken down in the box. Nani head-butted Acosta, which should have been a red card and sendoff, but the referee chose to take no action. In the 89th minute, there was a handball in the box called against the Rapids and, of course, Nani scored the winning goal. Perhaps things will be different this year when the Florida side comes to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The Burgundy Boys kick-off 2020 at D.C. United on Saturday, February 29th at 11 a.m. MT. With the addition of two more expansion teams, MLS decided to change up the schedule next year. Clubs will still play 34 games (17 home and 17 away) and will face their conference opponents twice during the season, but will only have 10 games against teams in the opposite conference. We don’t yet know which other Eastern Conference teams the Rapids will play.
