As Rapids supporters ready themselves for the continuation of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft and rejoice at the acquisition of University of Denver’s Andre Shinyashiki (fifth overall pick), we should take time to get to know the other two picks taken by our Colorado Rapids.
Marcello Borges, defender, University of Michigan (28th pick overall)
With 11 total appearances for the US National Team (one for the U18s and ten for the U20s), Borges has shown a tenacity on the defensive end at left back. His accolades include Third Team selection to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region, two-time All-Big Ten (2017-18: Second Team), and Academic All-Big Ten. He also spent five years in the New York Red Bulls Academy (2010-2015).
Jacob Hauser-Ramsey, defender, University of Connecticut (42nd pick overall)
The Rapids also acquired Hauser-Ramsey on Friday. He was a unanimous pick to the AAC All-Conference First Team and was also the AAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. He helped UConn to five shutout wins and a ten-game unbeaten streak from Sept. 8 to Oct. 23. Hauser-Ramsey joins Carlos Alvarez, Tony Cascio, and David Castellanos as former UConn players who have played for the Rapids.
Again, the third and fourth rounds of the MLS SuperDraft take place today (Monday, January 14). Here’s hoping for more players that can contribute to the club either here or in Colorado Springs.
