Game Preview: Colorado Rapids vs. Atlanta United

The Colorado Rapids play host to Atlanta United, who have set the league on fire this year.

MLS: Atlanta United FC at Orlando City SC Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids play host to Atlanta United FC, who have set the league on fire this year. Atlanta FC is one point (54) behind New York Red Bulls in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. It also doesn’t hurt that ATLUD has MLS single-season record goal scorer Josef Martinez. With 28 goals so far, he basically averages a goal a game. Last week Atlanta had off but lost to DC 3-1 on September 2nd, so both teams will be looking for a win to bounce back.

The plan of attack for the Rapids is, to have one. The Rapids have not scored in a month (since the 2-2- tie in LA on August 14th). Acosta was away with the USMNT for the last two games but is expected to play today, but forward Niki Jackson is listed as out due to an ankle injury. Axel Sjoberg is listed out with a nagging knee injury which is unfortunate, he could be a big help in slowing down ATL’s Josef Martinez (though Dirty South Soccer filled us in on what the Rapids defense needs to do).

Though Colorado has had a tough go of it this year, there is still fight in them. This is a good time for Coach Hudson to start building on the foundation of players that we already have. The core of the team will be here next year and there is a strong youth movement that should not go ignored. Sam Nicholson may become a mainstay and Cole Bassett may be that missing midfielder in time.
