Burgundy Boys on Loan, Week 20

While the bulk of the Rapids loanees were in town for the mid-week tilt with Boca Juniors, there are still some great USL games coming up.

MLS: Colorado Rapids at New England Revolution Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids picked up a spirited, and if we are being honest, entertaining 2:2 (5-4 PK) victory over Boca Juniors on Tuesday night. Normally, the first team would not be something we would talk too much about in this article, but multiple players on loan got time in this one including:

Sam Hamilton, Kip Colvey, and Niki Jackson all started this one with Sam Vines, Caleb Calvert, and Ricardo Perez coming in as substitutes.

As for this weekend, here is what to watch for with the Burgundy Boys on Loan

Saturday, July 28, 2018

Charlotte Independence (7-8-6, 27 Points) vs Penn FC (6-6-7, 25 Points)

Location: The Sportsplex at Matthews—Matthews, North Carolina—5:30 PM MDT

What to Watch For: Will the real Charlotte Independence please stand up and be counted? They find themselves on the wrong side of the red line in the Eastern Conference, and while there is still plenty of time to get above it, the lack of consistency is disturbing. They have scored 29 goals in 21 games, but have surrendered 31. They are on a 1-4-0 (3 points) clip in their last five and truly looked terrible at times. They do play well at home (five wins in tight), but need to start beating the teams below them in the table.

Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (2-6-11, 17 Points) vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (8-11-4, 28 Points)

Location: H-E-B Park—Edinburg, Texas—6:30 PM MDT

What to Watch For: The Switchbacks are much like the Independence as the only consistent thing is their inconsistency. But when you are playing a two-win team—regardless of whether it is on the road or at home—you need to get all three points.

Real Monarchs SLC (13-5-2, 41 Points) vs Phoenix Rising (11-4-5, 38 Points)

Location: Zions Bank Stadium—Herriman, Utah—8:00 PM MDT

What to Watch For: In the Western Conference, these are the top two teams. In USL, these are two of the top three. This should be a very good display of USL soccer and one not to be missed.
