Just five minutes after the ref missed a blatant handball in the box off a Jack Price free kick, Sporting Kansas City ran down the field and earned their own free kick. They played it back and then booted it into the box for Ike Opara, who got his head on it and sent the ball far post. Khiry Shelton dove and also got his head on it, but hit the crossbar. Unfortunately, Daniel Salloi ran in and blasted it into the back of the net. No one was on Salloi and Tim Howard was frozen on his line, and the Kansas City side went up 1-0 in the 16th minute of the game.
We saw Sam Nicholson, the Rapids’ newest acquisition, get a start, but many of us were confused to see Jack McBean and Kip Colvey in the starting XI over some of the bench options.
After a not-so-great first half, Anthony Hudson and the Colorado Rapids made some adjustments for the second half but it wasn’t enough. Joe Mason subbed in at halftime for McBean, and after dribbling the ball out of bounds and then ‘megging himself, Colvey was replaced by the homegrown Dillon Serna in the 79th minute.
The Rapids’ best chance came in the 80th minute when Dominique Badji got a one-on-one with the keeper. He tried to bend it in and instead the ball went mere inches wide of the goal.
The Rapids have been shut out twice in their last three games, and it’s no surprise tonight with only two shots on target and 40% possession. We need guys to get healthy and we need Stefan Aigner.
