Game Preview: Sporting KC vs Colorado Rapids

Both teams are looking to come back from less-than-stellar performances last weekend.

If you are looking for more reasons to call the Sporting Kansas City and Colorado Rapids games a rivalry, consider this fact: Prior to the last match (which ended in a 2-2- draw), neither team had scored multiple goals in the same match. In most cases, the Rapids are on the back side of a streak against a foe, but six out of the last eight games against Sporting KC have gone the Rapids’ way.

Sporting KC sits atop of the Western Conference with a 5-2-2 record, going 3-1-1 at home. The Rapids still are one win away from .500 all-time against Sporting KC with an all-time record of 23-24-14. Sporting had a seven-game unbeaten streak going until last week, and both teams are looking to avoid a streak going the other way.

When it comes to progress, that is the one thing Coach Hudson has shown us. Each time we face a team the second or third time, we have improved upon the previous result. Last time the Rapids played host to KC, we went up 2-0 really fast and then let the blue team back into the game in the second half.

The Rapids Achilles heel, though, has been their mentality late in games. The Burgundy Boys have shown that they like to go out and get an early lead, so the real trick will be to hold on to it.

On the injury front, the only new official addition would be Nana who suffered a concussion last week. We haven’t seen much of Johan Blomberg, nor is he listed as injured, so one might take a stab at fatigue, though we sure could use him today. We saw Shkelzen Gashi go out due to a groin injury, and while also not on the injury list, I fear he may not play. There could be a chance we see the new signing Sam Nicholson, so maybe that trade was for a player we can use right now. If Blomberg and Gashi are out, Nicholson would be the next man up if Aigner is still in the doghouse.

Coach said earlier in the week this is not a game where one point will be enough. He also stated he hadn’t had to make the decision of whether or not Yannick Boli should start until now.

We could see some new faces in the lineup tonight—will that be enough for the Rapids to bag three points?
