On David Villa Day, in celebration of his 400th career goal, the Colorado Rapids came into Yankee Stadium to play the 3rd place New York City FC and came out the losers, beating the Rapids 4-0 on a rainy day in the Bronx.

Whereas last week, the Rapids surrendered a goal five minutes in against the New York Red Bulls, they almost topped that feat with NYC getting a shot in the first 30 seconds. Thank you, Mr. Howard:

David Villa, the man of the hour and according to the ‘script,’ scores in the 22nd minute to put the home team up 1-0 from a pour and likely rain-soaked clearance right down the middle, allowing NYCFC to gather.

Coming out of the half, New York City’s Ronald Matarrita puts it away in the 49th minute with a class header off the rebound from a Tim Howard save that left the Rapids backline flat-footed.

In the 56th minute, New York City’s Maximiliano Morález takes the ball tackled away from David Villa that leaves Howard stuck. 3-0 NYCFC.

And if that wasn’t enough, Rapids fans, in the 74th, David Villa takes advantage of Deklan Wynne committing too far inside for an easy finish and Villa’s second of the day.

Hudson made some offensive-minded substitutions, but to no avail.

  • 59’ Yannick Boli comes up for Joe Mason
  • 67’ Jack McBean comes on for Dominique Badji
  • 75’ Shkelzen Gashi subbed in for Sam Nicholson

In the three games the Rapids have played at Yankee Stadium, NYCFC have outscored them 10-1. Few Rapids supporters held out hope for a result, but did hope for a better showing than this. Supporters can take comfort that four of the next five Rapids matches are at home. Hopefully, this will help our boys and burgundy get off their five-game losing streak.

David Villa Day brought about a Bronx cheer from Rapids fans. Here’s hoping for a better showing next Saturday at home against the Portland Timbers (7:00 pm).
