Once again, an opposition put matters away late as Colorado (2-3-2) lose their first match at home in 2018, this time to Orlando City SC (5-2-1) to the tune of 2-1.
Colorado looked strong, taking the majority of the possession in the first 30 minutes. The quickness and pressure the Rapids used in the first third of the game produced three corners, with one corner almost producing goal number one, but Tommy Smith’s header came off the post and the threat was averted. Dominique Badji put away his fifth goal of 2018 (he had nine in all of 2017) in the 25th minute on a beautiful over-the-top assist from Enzo Martinez.
Orlando City found their groove for the rest of the first half and the majority of the second half. In the 52nd minute, after the Rapids’ defense failed to the clear the ball, Cristian Higuita lasered a goal into the top 90 past what seemed to be a wrong-footed Zac MacMath, equalizing the match.
After this, the game grew chippy, escalating in a vicious collision between the Rapids’ Nana Boateng and Orlando City’s Will Johnson, resulting in Boateng being knocked out for a moment. While he walked off under his own power, he left the game for good.
The icing on the proverbial cake was Serna fouling Orlando City’s Yoshimar Yotun in the box, who proceeded to put away a penalty and providing the winning goal, leaving Rapids supporters once again frustrated that another match slipped through the Rapids fingers late once again.
The Rapids play this coming Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park against Sporting Kansas City. The game starts at 6:30 MT and will be shown on Altitude and for those outside of the Rapids market area on ESPN+.
