Burgundy Boys on Loan, Week Seven

A new loanee joins the contingent of Rapids plying their trade outside of the mothership

MLS: Colorado Rapids at New England Revolution Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids announced last week that they had sent striker Niki Jackson on loan to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, which brings the total to six players who are spending time away from Commerce City. Jackson joins Caleb Calvert, Andrew Dykstra, Ricardo Perez, and Sam Vines in Charlotte. Mike da Fonte is with Phoenix Rising FC.

Here is how the Burgundy Boys on loan did this past weekend:

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 0:0 Seattle Sounders 2

Jackson made his debut (more on that below) as the Switchbacks battled to a gritty 0-0 draw with Sounders 2.

Phoenix Rising FC 2:2 Swope Park Rangers

A fairly boring match for the first two-thirds of it. After the 66th minute, there were:

  • Four Goals
  • Two Yellow Cards
  • One Red Card

Da Fonte played the full 90 minutes for Phoenix and had a total of seven clearances to go along with one shot on target with a passing accuracy rating of 77%.

Charlotte was off this past weekend.

Charlotte Independence (2-2-1, 7 Points) vs Indy Eleven (3-1-0, 9 Points)

Location: Matthews Sportsplex—Matthews, NC—5:00 PM MDT

What to Watch For: The Independence are coming off a bye-week and have not won since the second game of the season. That streak, to go with some leaky defense and poor offense, has led to some questions and could call into question who starts this weekend. Andrew Dykstra and Caleb Calvert have started each game this year, but should they do so going forward?

Orange County SC (4-2-1, 13 Points) vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (3-4-1, 10 Points)

Location: Champions Soccer Stadium at OC Great Park—Irvine, CA—8:00 PM MDT

What to Watch For: This could be Jackson’s second appearance for the Switchbacks as he made his debut last weekend against Seattle Sounders 2. He played a total of 35 minutes with one shot last weekend. When Jackson came in, he played in the midfield on the right side in a 4-2-3-1.

Phoenix Rising FC (3-1-2, 11 Points) vs Fresno FC (2-1-4, 10 Points)

Location: Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex—Tempe, AZ—8:00 PM MDT

What to Watch For: Phoenix sits just three points out of the top of the table and is having a solid season so far. Rapids defender Mike da Fonte has had a great season so far and will look to continue that against a Fresno team that will be making their first trip to Phoenix this year.
