Last year, the Colorado Rapids community pulled together to raise money and show our support for Laurie Ford, who is the mother of Rapids defender Kortne Ford. Laurie’s cancer numbers decreased last year, but we found out last month that those numbers have started to climb again and the doctors have given her a terminal diagnosis.
Laurie drives three hours round trip, five days a week for treatments that are not covered by insurance. There is a test that can determine the type of chemotherapy that would target her cancer cells. It’s also not covered by insurance and costs $10,000.
Over the past year, the soccer community has rallied and raised more than $40,000 to let the Fords know that we are all pulling for a miracle, but the family still needs our help. To continue to bring awareness to the situation and bring in more donations, the Rapids have designated this Saturday, April 14th, as “Laurie Ford Day.”
In recognition of Laurie, there will be several special things going on at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday:
- BEFORE THE GAME: Head over to Burgundy Boulevard near Eighteen76 to sign a giant #SupportTheFords card that will be presented to Laurie.
- You can purchase a limited-edition game day poster for $10 over at Section 129. Proceeds will go towards Laurie’s fund.
- 24TH MINUTE: Everyone is encouraged to stand during the 24th minute of the game to show support for and in recognition of Laurie’s battle with cancer.
- STICK AROUND FOR THE BEGINNING OF HALFTIME: Kort and his mom will be brought onto the field for the opportunity to show Laurie just how many people are behind her.
