Dominiuqe Badji earned himself a hat trick with some impressive finishing to carry the team over the Philadelphia Union on a cold night in Commerce City.

The Philadelphia Union got into the box early in the first half and continued to put pressure on the Colorado Rapids. Edgar Castillo had a couple chances in the first 15 minutes, but the Rapids best chance was off a corner at the very end of the half. Tommy Smith headed it towards the goal but Andre Blake blocked it and then the Union cleared the ball to go into halftime 0-0.

It looked like Philadelphia dominated the half, but they actually had just under 57% possession and no shots on goal. Colorado, on the other hand, had four shots with two on target.

Danny Wilson was fouled and went down towards the end of the half. Axel Sjoberg started warming up but didn’t come in until the second half started.

Early in the half, the Rapids earned a free kick which was deflected out of bounds for a Colorado corner. Jack Price took the corner, Joe Mason got a head on it, and then Dominique Badji tapped it in for his second goal of the season in the 53rd minute.

Head Coach Anthony Hudson had to use another sub due to injury in the 59th minute when Marlon Hairston went down and was carried off on a stretcher. Dillon Serna made his first appearance for the Rapids in 2018 to come in for the injured Hairston. A couple minutes later, Serna crossed the ball into Johan Blomberg who brought the ball down and took a shot. Blake dove to his right towards Blomberg’s shot, but it was deflected by a defender, which sent it over to Badji in front of the open net. Badji easily scored his second goal of the night to put the Rapids up 2-0.

Stefan Aigner also made his 2018 debut for Colorado when he subbed in for Joe Mason in the 79th minute.

Tim Howard had to work harder in the second half, with Philadelphia getting some dangerous-ish looks. In the 87th minute, Jack Price fed the ball up the left side to a sprinting Badji. With a defender and goalkeeper in front of him and another defender coming up behind him, Badji went far post past Blake to get a hat trick for the night.

The Rapids took home all three points and finished the month 1-1-1 for the third year in a row.
