The Switchbacks FC announced Monday morning that Shane Malcolm has been called up to the Guam National Team. The Guam National Team will be playing friendlies with Los Dos and San Diego State during the next FIFA International Fixture Window week between 3/19 and 3/27. This likely means he will be unavailable for the next game against Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday 3/24.
While there have been several Switchbacks players over the years with prior international experience with their respective countries, Malcolm is the first to be called up while an active player for the Switchbacks. He has 20 caps for Guam and has scored two goals.
”It’s an honor to be called up to the National Team,” said Malcolm. “I’m looking forward to meeting the new coach and staff they have. We haven’t played in a year, so I’m looking forward to getting some time in before upcoming competitive fixtures.”
”It’s a great honor for him,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “I talked to the coach a few weeks ago when he was going to call him up, and anytime you get the opportunity to get called up to your National Team it’s an honor. They’re trying to get to the next level with this new head coach and Shane is a big part of that.”
Guam, a member of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup but has had recent progress in hosting World Cup qualifiers in Guam, a first for the nation of 162,000. Their current FIFA ranking is 191.
