After relatively no news since the season ended for the Colorado Rapids on October 28th, a lot has happened in recent weeks. Add in the holidays, and chances are high that you could’ve missed something, so here’s a round-up of all the big news that’s dropped lately:
- MLS is changing the playoff format for 2019. The two biggest changes, in my opinion, are that every game will be single elimination and the playoffs will be sandwiched between the international breaks. There’s more to it than that, and you can read about all the changes here.
- We didn’t lose anyone in the expansion draft and managed to pick up forward Kei Kamara by sending an international slot to FC Cincinnati.
- The Rapids traded Zac MacMath to Vancouver for potential #10 Nicolas Mezquida. By the end of the week, the club brought back Clint Irwin and added a young keeper from NYCFC to the roster.
- The following week, Colorado resigned Edgar Castillo and traded him to New England for midfielder Kelyn Rowe (NE paid the transfer fee to Monterrey). They then sent Rowe to Sporting Kansas City in exchange for forward Diego Rubio.
- A day later, it was announced that the Rapids had acquired defender Keegan Rosenberry from Philadelphia Union. Rosenberry and Kellyn Acosta, along with 25 other MLS players, were both called up for the January USMNT camp.
- The home openers were announced and the Rapids are hosting the Portland Timbers on Saturday, March 2nd at 4 p.m.
- Lastly, the preseason schedule was released. The Burgundy Boys won’t be going to Arizona this year, but will instead be traveling to Florida, San Diego/Southern California, and Vegas.
