The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today the return of three players from the 2018 season. Re-signing to a new contract is forward Shane Malcolm, while forward Saeed Robinson and defender Jamal Jack had their options picked up by the team.
Malcolm returns for his third season with the team, coming off a productive 2018 where he led the team in both goals (6) and assists (5). The 27-year-old forward has 22 caps with the Guam National Team, including two during the 2018 season, making him the first active Switchbacks player to receive an international call-up. Malcolm earned the USL Goal of the Week in week 15 for his free-kick goal against Fresno FC on June 23rd, 2018.
Robinson returns for his fourth season with Colorado Springs, playing in the 2015 and 2016 seasons, as well as 2018. The 28-year-old Jamaican has 82 appearances for the Switchbacks and 12 goals, including 5 in 2018. The speedster was a scoring threat, particularly late last season when he was nominated for the USL Goal of the Week four times and was selected to the USL Team of the Week during week 25.
Jack returns for his second season with Switchbacks, after starting all 34 games for the team in 2018. The 31-year-old Trinidadian led the team in almost all defensive stats, including clearances, blocks, duels won, aerial duels, and aerial duels won. Prior to the Switchbacks, Jack spent the 2017 season with the USL Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and has two caps with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team.
”With as much turnover we will have on the team, it’s important to have players familiar with the club,” said Switchbacks head coach, Steve Trittschuh. “These three contributed a lot last season and I expect them to perform even better in 2019.”
The announcement from the team brings the total number of players signed to the 2019 USL Championship season to 5, all former or current Switchbacks.
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks open the 2019 season on the road against the LA Galaxy II on March 9th, before opening at Weidner Field against Sacramento Republic FC on March 16th.
