MLS announces new playoff format for 2019

There have been some significant changes made for next year.

There are going to be major changes to the MLS playoff format for 2019.

Changes to the bracket

In 2018, 12 teams qualified for the playoffs. In 2019, 14 clubs will qualify. (That’s almost 60% of the league.)

A first-round bye will only be awarded to one team per conference.

Clubs that earn higher seeds will host all of their games.

Every game will be single elimination, so there will be no more aggregates.

There will be no reseeding throughout the tournament, so if “the No. 7 seed upsets the No. 2 seed, they’ll still play the winner of No. 3 vs. No. 6 irrespective of the other results.”

Changes to the schedule

There will be a break after the season to allow for the international break, then the playoffs will run straight through until the MLS Cup Final on November 10th. The playoffs will finish sooner and before the second international break.
