Game Preview: Colorado Rapids vs. LAFC

The Rapids host LAFC tonight in Commerce City.

MLS: Colorado Rapids at Los Angeles FC Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids are back home to host LAFC, who if you recall, is the team that started this current losing streak. This skid that has seen the Rapids lose six straight really has to do with the fact that they have scored just one goal while the other guys hit the back of the net 19 times.

In the mind of an athlete, there is always that little bit of an edge you keep when you want to get revenge on a team. LAFC could be just that, having been the one who started the latest losing streak.

With just four games left to play, the mentality can shift in a thousand different ways. Those players who have club options or little time left on their contract will have a different mindset than those who are locked in for a few more years. Jobs are on the line and individual performances will most likely be the last spark in a season that is merely embers.

The visitors today come to Dicks Sporting Goods park having lost to the Chicago Fire 3-1 last weekend. LAFC is in 3rd place in the Western Conference standings and, despite dropping points on the road last week, are 6-7-2 away from home.

Defensively, the Rapids will have to bring their A game. Both Carlos Vela (11) and Diego Rossi (10) have double-digit goals so far this season. You would have to add up the goals from almost every Rapid to equal that amount. Read more about LAFC here.

The idea going into today’s game for the Rapids is to not let the floodgates open and keep the ball off LAFC’s foot. The Rapids will want to hold most of the possession and if they can find some confidence in the final third and take shots, there is always a chance at an upset.
