Your Colorado Rapids are live at DSGP tonight in the first of the final six home games. Colorado has a later-than-usual start of 8pm against the Vancouver Whitecaps, who currently have a white-knuckled grip on the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Vancouver have spent the whole season scuffling along: their longest winning streak is two games, their shortest winning streak is two games. Last week they absolutely thumped top-of-the-table opponent FC Dallas 4-0, but the month before that, Vancouver recorded a 1-0 loss against a hapless DC United team, and drew expansion side Minnesota United 2-2. Inconsistency is pretty much par for the course with Carl Robinson, who likes to tinker with the lineup, the formation, and the tactics more than almost anyone else in MLS - for example, (former) left back Brek Shea has played at left mid, forward, and striker this season. Inconsistency also makes sense with a team that and is building its franchise around 16 year-old Canadian international Alphonso Davies. As Richard Terry mentioned in his game preview, Davies is out tonight with a groin injury.
A lot of those new adds have been big successes. Tony Tchani has steadied the midfield, Sheanon Williams has been an upgrade at right back, and Freddie Montero has bagged 8 goals at striker this season for the club. Also keep your eyes on Peruvian midfielder Yordy Reyna, who got only his first start of the season last match after a foot injury kept him off the pitch until July.
In case you were hoping to see new Rapids player Stefan Aigner’s debut, he has yet to receive his US visa and international transfer certificate from FIFA. Look for him to join the team by the end of August or early September.
