RUMOR: Rapids linked to midfielder George Fochive of Viborg FF

@MLSTransfers tweeted out this little tidbit earlier today.

MLS: MLS Cup Final-Portland Timbers at Columbus Crew Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today, @MLSTransfers tweeted out this little nugget of information:

Who?

George Fochive is a 25-year-old, American-born midfielder (though his hometown is listed as Paris, France) who was drafted by the Portland Timbers in the third round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He played for their USL affiliate Sacramento Republic in 2014, and then played in 11 games (with eight starts) for the Timbers in 2015. In those 11 games, he had an assist and a shot on goal (nine shots total). The Timbers won the MLS Cup in 2015.

On February 1, 2016, Fochive was sold to the Danish side Viborg FF. Fochive is a holding midfielder, which as RapidsRabbi said in a conversation we had about this rumor earlier, “he makes sense only if the team offloads a central midfielder like Azira or Powers.” The Rapids are not getting rid of Micheal Azira anytime soon, but there have been mutterings of Dillon Powers being on his way out, so perhaps there’s some truth to that?

There really isn’t much info. about Fochive out there, but his value is listed as just under $300,000 - close to Powers’ contract.

Here’s a highlight video of his time in Portland:

I thought this interview with Fochive and Timbers’ head coach Caleb Porter was interesting, too:

A Timbers fan had this to say about Fochive:

As always, we’ll keep you all updated if we hear anything else!
