Things have been... slow here at the Burgundy Wave Transfer news desk. Abbie and I stocked up on energy drinks and GORP, and were ready for the phone to ring off the hook with rumors and news and moves. Instead...
*crickets*
We’ve occupied our time by building forts from couch cushions, re-enacting scenes from John Hughes movies, and growing out Pablostaches in hopes that it will bring the Rapids better luck. So far, mine is better than Abbie’s.
And then this...
BREAKING NEWS: Colorado Rapids in advanced talks with Michael Carrick over a lucrative contract offer #MUFC #MLS #MARQUEE #RAPIDS96 pic.twitter.com/o7Ew7vlIfC
— TerraceTalk (@TTSportsHQ) July 19, 2017
Ok. Let’s give this some thought. First, the Rapids don’t really need a defensive midfielder - they need an attacker. A player that’s already 35 years old also doesn’t do a lot of good for a team that is probably looking to contend again in 2018 or 2019. Carrick was also recently named captain of Manchester Uniter. Carrick has never before been linked with MLS.
That said, his transfer fee wouldn’t be very high considering his age, and perhaps Carrick knows that Manchester United’s plan this season is to win the league, which might necessitate him sitting on those comfy puffy chairs on the Premier League sidelines a whole lot this year.
I think the odds of this one happening are low - 20 to 1 . It isn’t a great soccer move. It’s probably a good marketing move though. It might be another attempt to keep converting more Colorado EPL fans into Rapid fans - read these two things we wrote about the Tim Howard back when that deal happened.
We’ll keep our eye on it for you.
UPDATE: The Rapids’ Director of Communications said there’s no truth to the rumor:

Other News
Zlatan Ibrahimovic reportedly has rejected an offer for a $7.3 million contract with the LA Galaxy and wants to return to Manchester United. I still think there are twists and turns left in this saga...
Tomas Martinez, a talented Argentine attacking midfielder that had been playing with SC Braga in Portugal, is joining the Houston Dynamo. He joins young DPs Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto who transferred over the summer in creating a dangerous, young, attack-minded team. I think this move solidifies Houston as a top-half-of-the conference-team. Good for them. Bad for us.
