USOC Game Preview & How to Watch: FC Dallas vs. Colorado Rapids

The Rapids take on the defending US Open Cup Champions in the round of 16.

MLS: U.S. Open Cup-Colorado Rapids at FC Dallas Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

As much as we’ve been talking about the Colorado Rapids and their difficulties on the road, tonight is another big away match - the Burgundy Boys are taking on defending US Open Cup Champions FC Dallas tonight in the round of 16. While Dallas has lost just once at home so far this season, they have only won two of their last 10 games, and both were against Real Salt Lake. Meanwhile, the Rapids are 0-7-0 on the road this season (perhaps they’re due for a win?).

In the previous round of the 2017 US Open Cup, the Rapids made a second half comeback to beat OKC Energy 3-2, while FC Dallas barely beat the Tulsa Roughnecks 2-1 on an own goal in stoppage time.

Colorado got knocked out of the US Open Cup last year in Frisco in a 2-1 extra time loss (Dominique Badji had our only goal). This was also the match where we saw a season-ending injury for Dillon Serna after being tackled from behind by Agustin Jara.

This is an important game for the Rapids. Currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference, the Open Cup is a chance to make a run at some silverware (and snag a Champions’ League spot). But with so many games in a short time period (seven games in 21 days) and several injuries, Pablo Mastroeni’s options are somewhat limited. We may see Shkelzen Gashi return tonight, but with another game coming up on Saturday, it’s hard to tell who might fill in the starting XI tonight.

Tonight, Dallas is missing two key players: Kellyn Acosta and Matt Hedges, who both got called up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Tim Howard was left off the roster, so the Rapids have their full squad available.
