Game Preview & How to Watch: Colorado Rapids vs Vancouver Whitecaps

Tonight’s game is important for a couple reasons.

This evening the Colorado Rapids will play host to Vancouver Whitecaps at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. This Cinco de Mayo fixture will be the first time in 2017 the Western Conference sides have faced each other. Kick-off is set for 8:00pm MT and the match will be broadcast on Altitude.

The Colorado Rapids are winless since their opening game of the season, but while the beautiful game is played out on the pitch, there are bigger things than sport when it comes to rookie Rapids defender Kortne Ford. This past week, the Rapids organization and fans learned that Laurie Ford, Kort’s mother, has been diagnosed with cancer again. Rapids fans are asked to stand and cheer in support of Kort Ford and his mother during the 24th minute of the game (23:01-24:00) and are also encouraged to make hand-held signs to display as well. More details about #StandForTheFords can be found here.

Colorado (1-5-1, 4 points) are still at the foot of the Western Conference standings after finding themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat at Orlando City last Saturday. The Rapids first visit to Orlando City Stadium did not go well for the Rocky Mountain side as 2nd half strikes from Carlos Rivas and Kaka condemned Colorado to another defeat.

Vancouver (3-4-1, 10 points) are currently sitting in 6th place in the Western Conference. The Whitecaps came away with all three points last week at the Stade Saputo in a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact. Andrew Jacobson and Cristian Techera both scored after an early Montreal goal was scored by Marco Donadel.

Colorado has only lost once in the past 6 meetings between Vancouver, a stat that could potentially give the Rapids a boost going into Friday night. Tim Howard and Kort Ford have both served their suspensions and will be eligible for selection while Nana Boateng, Axel Sjoberg, and Caleb Calvert are still dealing with injuries.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup will be on display from 6-7:30 pm on the Eighteen76 patio, and after the game, too.

Above all else, remember to #StandForTheFords on Friday night wherever you are watching or following the game.
