Since the Colorado Springs Switchbacks have been in existence, the USL team has met the Colorado Rapids in the MLS round of the U.S. Open Cup. In 2015, the Rapids eliminated the Switchbacks by winning 4-1, and last year, the Rapids won 1-0. And it looks like the two teams could meet again, if the Switchbacks can beat OKC Energy FC on May 31st.
The Switchbacks have home field advantage against OKC, and then the Rapids have home field advantage against the winner of that game. According to our local Switchbacks expert, Jason Smith, “there’s no reason they [the Switchbacks] should lose to OKC. They are near the bottom of the table, it’s a pretty heated rivalry, and we play them again in like four days." (Colorado Springs and Oklahoma City have a regular season match on June 3rd.)
In the 2015 win, Dominique Badji had a goal, Dillon Serna had two, and Joseph Greenspan netted one for the Burgundy Boys. In 2016, Dillon Serna scored the only goal. We typically see players in the Open Cup that don’t get a ton of playing time during the regular MLS season, so regardless of who we play, I’m hoping to see Joshua Gatt and Sam Hamilton get some minutes (and of course Dillon Serna and Caleb Calvert).
For the past three years, the Rapids have been eliminated from the tournament in the 5th round. In 2016, they lost to FC Dallas, who went on to win the Open Cup.
The 4th round match with the Rapids will be held on June 13 or 14 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park at 7 p.m.
