On Saturday, April 15th, the Colorado Rapids will play host to Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for the first time in the 2017 campaign. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM MDT and the match will be broadcast on Altitude.
The Rapids and RSL will renew the Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry in Commerce City tonight. Both sides have struggled to start the season as Colorado and RSL both only have one win to their name so far. Regardless, Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni and new Real Salt Lake coach Mike Petke know how important these matches are to both sets of supporters.
Colorado (1-2-1, 4 points) have had a disappointing run in the league since opening with a victory against New England on the first match day of the season, but have a chance to get back to winning ways against an RSL side that hadn’t won a game until last weekend. Most recently, the Rapids lost 3-1 at Kansas City on April 9th. Kevin Doyle scored from the penalty spot, but it was a late consolation goal for the visitors.
Real Salt Lake (1-3-2, 5 points) recorded their first victory of 2017 in wintry conditions at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night as the Claret and Cobalt won 3-0 over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Freezing rain poured down in the first half while the second half featured a snow-covered pitch complete with an orange soccer ball. Mike Petke will be pleased with his side’s performance but he’ll want to keep the momentum going in the Mile High City.
This match will be the first home game for Colorado since March 18th, where the Rapids played Minnesota United to a 2-2 draw. The FC Dallas fixture was originally set for April 1st, but the league moved the match to later in the year to accommodate FC Dallas in the CONCACAF Champions League. A victory over RSL would not only be a boost for the team, but also to the Rapids fans, who want to see the team mimic the success of last season.
