What to Watch This Weekend: The Sky is Not Falling Edition

I am the pessimist on staff, and I am here to tell you, things are OK.

MLS: Colorado Rapids at Sporting KC Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

Some of you know me.

Some of you do not.

For those who do not, I am John Rosch, the former Managing Editor of Burgundy Wave. I have written about the team for five seasons now and been a season ticket holder with the Colorado Rapids longer than that. I have literally seen it all with this team. I have been called many names in my time writing for about the Rapids (Front Office Lackey, Tim Hinchey’s Mouthpiece, Out of Touch Rosch, Stupid, Moron, etc.).

I get it. Rapids fans are a passionate bunch. We are opinionated and not afraid to share it. A Rapids fan has many traits...but patience may not be one of them. I get that the performance in Kansas was pretty terrible. And I also get that the Rapids have just 9 shots on goal in four games.

But no Rapids fans, the sky is not falling. I am the pessimist on staff, and was the only one that predicted that the Rapids would miss the playoffs, but this is match FOUR of THIRTY-FOUR. This is not the time to be losing our crap over a bad game in Kansas against a very solid Sporting Kansas City team. And remember, we had just lost two critical veterans and it was clear that Bismark Adjei-Boateng was bound to have teething troubles in his first start. Also, Tim Howard had a bad game. How many times is that going to happen?

Do the Rapids need to improve? Yes.

But is this the time for Rapids fans to freak out? Nope.

Now, for what am I watching this weekend:

Major League Soccer

Colorado Rapids vs Real Salt Lake—Saturday, 7:00 PM MDT

It’s the Rapids vs Real Sandy. Nothing else needs to be said, and no other MLS game matters.

United Soccer League

Charlotte Independence vs Pittsburgh Riverhounds—Saturday, 5:00 PM MDT

Kind of been a rough start for the Independence so far. They are nomads as their new home in Matthews gets ready, and so they are playing at Winthrop University on Saturday evening. They are 14th in the table with a 0-1-1 (1 point, -2 GD) record but only a win away from a playoff spot. Pittsburgh are in a playoff position right now, but it is early and the Independence will be looking for full points at home (sort of).

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC vs Real Monarchs SLC—Saturday, 6:00 PM MDT

It’s an affiliate of Real Sandy playing the Switchbacks. ‘Nuff Said. But in all seriousness, the Monarchs are top of the Western Conference right now with a 3-0-0 (9 points, +5GD) record. The Switchbacks are coming off a mixed road trip, where they grabbed just one point out of a possible six. But Colorado Springs will be looking to knock off the league leaders in a match that is truly winnable. (Fix the defense though Lads. It’s leaking pretty bad.)

A whole lot going on this weekend, soccer wise, but those are the three key matches that I am looking at.

In the Premier League, there are some tasty ties with Crystal Palace taking on the Champions and Manchester City traveling to Southampton. And then there is that little Man United v Chelsea match on Sunday.

It is shaping up to be a terrific few days of footy!

What are you planning to watch?
