Our friend Dan Boniface at the Denver Post reported that Axel Sjoberg had surgery on his hamstring today, and will be out 6-8 weeks. (Update: The Colorado Rapids confirmed this in a press release this afternoon.) The 2016 Defender of the Year candidate went down late in the game last weekend against the New York Red Bulls, but hobbled off the field on his own. An MRI on Monday showed that the center back would need surgery.

“My conversation with him last night was just get back as soon as possible and do everything that you can and we’ll keep this thing going,” said Colorado Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni.

Veteran center back Bobby Burling will step up and take Sjöberg’s place in the meantime, with Kortne Ford and new addition Mike Da Fonte providing some depth. The signing of Da Fonte seems like quite a coincidence, but supposedly the deal had been in the works for weeks.

I think I speak for us all when I say that we wish Axel a speedy recovery.
