A couple weeks ago, a rumor sprung up in a Colorado Rapids Facebook group about Mike da Fonte coming to the Rapids. I’ll be the first to admit, I blew it off as ridiculous. We already have four center backs, why add another? But perhaps after Axel Sjoberg’s injury last weekend, they decided to bring in an extra reinforcement. We still don’t know the details of Sjöberg’s injury, but this could be a sign that it’s not good. For what it’s worth, I would still argue that we don’t need a central defender, considering we have Bobby Burling and Kortne Ford. Maybe Burling is on his way out this summer, but for the love of all that is holy, can we please bring in someone to boost the offense??? Rapids Rabbi looks more into the “why” right here.

But you’d probably like to know that Da Fonte was signed to a two-year deal after scoring four goals in 19 appearances at Sacramento Republic FC. Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni said, “we are pleased to have Mike join our club for the next two seasons. He is a very athletic central defender with experience in Europe and with two prominent USL sides. We look forward to welcoming Mike to the Rapids.”

In the team’s official announcement, Rapids Sporting Director Pádraig Smith said that “Mike impressed in our preseason meeting with Sacramento last year and we continued to track his progress. He provides competition and increased depth to our already strong defensive core. He is a player who we think has the necessary tools to be successful at the next level.”

Welcome to Colorado and MLS, Mike!
