2017 MLS Expansion Draft: Who will the Rapids protect?

It’s a little bit easier to guess this year.

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Denver Nuggets Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

After the way the Colorado Rapids’ defense performed last year, we were all pretty concerned that someone would get picked in the Expansion Draft. But no one did. This year, the Rapids are not coming off of a successful season and the roster has already been pared down to pretty much bare bones. Rapids Rabbi and I talked it over briefly and pretty much agreed on the same list this time:

1. Stefan Aigner

2. Micheal Azira

3. Dominique Badji

4. Johan Blomberg

5. Nana Boateng

6. Axel Sjöberg

7. Eric Miller

8. Shkëlzen Gashi

9. Marlon Hairston

10. Tim Howard

11. Zac MacMath

Homegrown - auto-protected

Dillon Serna

Kortne Ford

Ricardo Perez

Caleb Calvert (I have confirmed with the team that he is still considered HG under his new contract)

Mike da Fonte

Jared Watts

Sam Hamilton

As you can see, there are only three players left to go unprotected. Mike da Fonte, who the team has already said will be out on loan this year; Sam Hamilton, who the team loaned to Phoenix Rising FC; and Jared Watts, who neither coach could seem to find a good spot for this season.

My guess is that LAFC isn’t going to take any of them.

What do you think?

Quick Review of the Expansion Draft Rules:

  • The Expansion Draft will be on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 2 pm EST.
  • LAFC gets 5 picks.
  • Each team can protect 11 players and only one player can be taken per team. Homegrown and Generation adidas players are automatically protected, don’t count in the teams’ 11, and cannot be selected.
  • The complete list of players available will be released on Sunday, Dec. 10 by 5:30 pm EST.
