The Colorado Rapids will look to get back on track as they travel north of the border to British Columbia to face off against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night. Two straight goalless draws have seen the Commerce City, CO side succumb to FC Dallas for the lead in the Western Conference Standings. Regardless, the Rapids still only have two losses on the season.
Colorado (9-2-6, 33 points) are coming off a 0-0 Independence Day draw against Portland Timbers at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Monday evening. United States international goalkeeper Tim Howard made his Rapids debut but the home side were unable to claim all three points against the reigning MLS Cup Champions. However, the former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper made two key saves to preserve the clean sheet as both teams earned a share of the spoils.
Vancouver (7-8-3, 24 points) are on the cusp of a playoff spot as the season is roughly at it's midway point. The Whitecaps suffered a 2-0 loss to LA Galaxy on the 4th of July at the StubHub center as Robbie Keane and Jeff Larentowicz both scored off assists from Steven Gerrard. LA Galaxy's Nigel de Jong was sent off for a horror challenge in the 2nd half...what's new?
The high-flying Rapids will be looking to gain ground on FC Dallas and potentially take back first place in not only the Western Conference, but the MLS Supporter's Shield lead. Colorado's defense has given up a league-leading 11 goals in 17 games. That's absolutely fantastic given the fact that Axel Sjoberg and Eric Miller have anchored the defense, along with Jared Watts. Colorado also have two games in hand over FC Dallas as well.
