US Open Cup: Round Three Review

Charlotte loses in extra time while the Switchbacks keep on rolling.

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Third Round of the US Open Cup is done and dusted and the round saw the Charlotte Independence and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC take the pitch in an attempt to make a run at Major League Soccer competition in the fourth round.

Here is our Third Round Review:

Carolina RailHawks (NASL) 5:0 (AET) Charlotte Independence (USL)

Well, this one started out solidly.  The Independence were playing well and had a number of chances to put one on the board, but in the 29th minute Charlotte went down to 10 men and the Lads responded brilliantly and held on for an hour forcing the game into Extra Time.  However, Charlotte was completely gassed and gave up five goals that did not tell the full story of the match.

Charlotte's US Open Cup run is over while Carolina RailHawks will host New England Revolution on June 15

Arizona United SC (USL) 0:3 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL)

For the second consecutive year, the Centennial Derby will be played as the Switchbacks earned a date with the Colorado Rapids on the strength of a 3-0 win over Arizona United SC.  The game was scoreless until deep into the first half when Luke Vercollne put the Colorado Springs up and the Switchbacks never looked back.

Colorado Springs and the Rapids will take the pitch in the fourth round on June 15 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (kick off to be determined).
