US Open Cup Third Round Scenarios Announced

Where could Charlotte, Colorado Springs or Harpo's play if they advance?

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Last last week (on my birthday no less), US Soccer announced potential third round pairings for the 2016 US Open Cup and it could potentially impact three of the teams that we regularly cover here at the Wave.

A quick update on the second round:

Wednesday, 18 May 2016

Charlotte Independence (USL) at Charlotte Eagles (PDL)--5:00 PM MDT--Charlotte Christian School

Harpo's FC (USSSA) at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL)--7:00PM MDT--Switchbacks Stadium

There are a total of 21 second round matches and they all take place on the 18th of May.  But when does the third round start and more importantly, when do the Colorado Rapids enter the tournament?

Here are the potential third round match-ups:

Wednesday, 1 June 2016

IF Charlotte Independence win:

they play at Carolina Railhawks FC (NASL)--5:30 PM MDT--Cary, North Carolina

THE winner of the Harpo's FC v Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC match:

they play at Arizona United SC (USL)--7:30 PM MDT--Peoria, Arizona

--OR--

they play at FC Tucson (PDL)--7:30 PM MDT--Tucson, Arizona

Needless to say, there are quite a few scenarios going on with this, but the bottom line:  Charlotte, Harpo's FC and the Switchbacks will be on the road in Round Three (assuming they advance

The Rapids will enter the tournament in the fourth round and those games start on June 15 and just based on the regional nature of the tournament it's fun to begin to speculate who the Rapids *could* play.  I would have to think it comes out of the Harpo's FC/Switchbacks vs Arizona United/FC Tucson game which would be excellent.  It limits travel for the Rapids and if they get a home match, even better.  And if the opponent is Harpo's or the Switchbacks it makes their travel pretty easy as well.

We will have preview of the Harpo's FC v Switchbacks match and the Charlotte Independence v Charlotte Eagles match on Wednesday as all of our clubs march on trying to win the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
