The Colorado Rapids and US Soccer announced today that the reigning World Cup Champions will be making a return visit to Dick's Sporting Goods Park on June 2 to take on Japan as the USWNT continues their preparation for Rio.
From the Colorado Rapids press release:
In conjunction with U.S. Soccer, the Colorado Rapids announced today that Dick's Sporting Goods Park will host an international friendly between the United States Women's National Team and Japan on Thursday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. MT.
"We are honored to entertain the USWNT here at Dick's Sporting's Good Park," said Tim Hinchey, President of Colorado Rapids. "They thrilled the entire nation with their victory at the World Cup last year and hosting a repeat of the final makes us truly proud. We are looking forward to a great game."
The match will be the first time the United States Women's National Team will face off against Japan since their 5-2 victory at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup last summer. These two nations have met three times in major international finals - the 2011 and 2015 FIFA WWC Finals and the 2012 London Olympics gold medal game. The USA and Japan split the World Cup finals, while the USA won the gold medal match in 2012.
So the World Champions are coming back and they are playing the team that they defeated for the World Cup in July 2015? That is pretty darn awesome! And it follows a trend of DSGP holding big time international matches and will also serve as preparation as the club gets ready for the Rio Olympics.
