Colorado Rapids MatchDay First Look: Sporting Kansas City

The Rapids take on top of the table SKC on Wednesday night.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids finish up a quick two game road trip with a visit to Kansas City, Kansas to play Western Conference power Sporting Kansas City.   The Rapids will be looking to erase the memory of a 0-1 loss at Real Salt Lake on Saturday, whereas SKC will want to keep the momentum going after recording a 2-0 over New York Red Bulls.

The Records:

The Rapids are 2-2-1 (7 points) and currently occupy the sixth spot in the Western Conference and are ninth overall in MLS.  Sporting Kansas City are 4-1-0 (12 points) are are top of the Western Conference and also lead the Supporters Shield standings.

The Formations:

The Rapids have run out a 4-2-3-1 every match this season and there does not seem to be a call for change within the Rapids.  And with injuries and suspensions, I can't see this changing.  Sporting has run out the 4-3-3 with much success as they are top of the Supporters Shield Standings

Super Initial Early Thoughts

This is actually a winnable game for the Rapids.  I know, laugh away, but I think it is.  The Rapids generate a ton of chances and have a great deal of shots on target.   That is not their problem.  The problem the Rapids have is that they can't seem to score.  And to beat Sporting they will need to score goals.  Even with the Rapids stout defense, Sporting has an offense that is built to win games and championships.  The Rapids will need to find a way to contain the front three of Sporting, but also find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.

Is it a matter that the Rapids are snakebit in front of net or is it a matter that they have the wrong personnel or formation?  Whatever the issue, the Rapids will need to figure it out to defeat a solid Sporting Kansas City team.
