The Charlotte Independence kick off their second season today as they take on Louisville City FC in the opener for both clubs. For Charlotte, this is a big match. It's the first time they have had the chance to open a season at home (last year they were a bit nomadic the first couple of months of the year) but more importantly they want to get three points against a team who will be battling for the playoffs.
The Goal for Charlotte: win
What to Watch For
1) The Second Season: All told, Charlotte had a pretty damn successful first season in USL. They were 10-8-10 and missed the playoffs by a solitary point. For an expansion team, they did well, but there was that feeling of missed opportunities. Tonight against Louisville City FC is one of those opportunities. LCFC will be a team that will be in play for a playoff spot and it is important for Charlotte to get off on the right foot.
2) The Starting XI: A big question for Charlotte is who starts? The team now has 17 players signed and under contract (that includes two Colorado Rapids players) so you have to figure that everyone is going to get plenty of playing time. Who starts and who is on the bench will be an interesting question that gets answered later today.
3) Loan Watch: Emmanuel Appiah and Caleb Calvert are with Charlotte and you have to hope that they get playing time and can make an Impact. And with just 17 players on the roster, you have to think that a good possibility. I still really want to see Calvert succeed but he has to play well in USL first.
