The FIFA Simulation: D.C. United 2:3 Colorado Rapids

The Rapids and DC play today. Did the FIFA simulation tell us anything?

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids play at D.C. United this afternoon looking for their first win.  In preparation for the match at RFK Stadium I ran a FIFA simulation to see how things might play out.  For a Starting XI I chose a lineup I think might be put out there, but that is certainly dependent on fitness and what style of game that Pablo Mastroeni wants to play.

It could not have started worse for the Rapids.  They gave up a goal in the second minute after terrible back pass from Rapids Captain Kevin Doyle, but the Rapids tied it up in the 35th minute on a gorgeous goal from Dillon Serna who put in a Man of the Match performance.

The second half started with Rapids down 2-1 and  the opening 20 minutes in the second half was tough for the Rapids as DC dominated possession.   However Zach Pfeffer scored two minutes after entering the field to make it 2-2 in the 70th.  It looked like it would end in a tie, but a DC own goal in stoppage time gave all three points to the Burgundy Boys.

The Game kicks off for real at 3PM MDT and can be seen on ESPN2.

Rapids Starting XI

Zac MacMath, Mekeil Williams, Jared Watts, Axel Sjoberg, Marc Burch, Micheal Azira, Sam Cronin, Dillon Serna, Marco Pappa, Dillon Powers, Kevin Doyle

Match Moments

2nd Min: GOAL D.C. United.  A gorgeous unstopable goal gives the hosts an early lead and the Rapids look to be in disaray.  Kevin Doyle had a terrible back pass that DC capitalized.  Not the start the Rapids wanted.

9th Min: POST!  Azira with a beautiful drive straight up the heart of the DC defense rattles off the left post and DC still lead 1-0

21st Min: CHANCE.  Some excellent build up play by the Rapids and Powers is able to rip a shot that required a diving save by the DC keeper.

22nd Min: CHANCE.  The ensuing corner kick falls back to Watts who blasts it over the top of the bar.

28th Min: GOAL.  Serna ties it up for the Rapids after a great sequence of passing and possesion for the Burgundy Boys.  Game now tied 1-1

35th Min: CHANCE.  Serna is having a hell of game and gets another shot off but this one is saved.

37th Min: GOAL.  DC United regains the lead on a simply terrific and unstoppable in the upper right corner.  Now 2-1 to the hosts.

42nd Min: YELLOW CARD.  Kevin Doyle goes into the book with a late challenge.

53rd Min: CHANCE.  DC United is on the front foot to start the second half and the Rapids back four is under a great deal of pressure.

56th Min: YELLOW CARD.  Williams goes into the book for taking out his opponent from behind.

60th Min: CHANCE.  Powers had a good look at goal, but his shot was too weak to trouble the goalkeeper.

68th Min: SUBSTITUTION.  Kevin Doyle is replaced by Conor Doyle and Dillon Powers is pulled in favor of Zach Pfeffer.

70th Min: GOAL.  Pfeffer comes on and makes an immediate impact and ties the game at two with a great goal.  Get In!

70th Min: SUBSTITUTION.  Azira is pulled for Marlon Hairston.

80th Min: CHANCE.  Serna gets a free kick after being fouled and blasts his shot right at the DC keeper.  Still 2-2

89th Min: CHANCE.  Conor Doyle almost gets a goal against his old team but it required some pretty damn good skill to keep it out.

90th Min (+2): GOAL.  OWN GOAL.  DC United puts it in the back of their own net to give the Rapids the lead!!!
