Earlier this week it was announced that Colorado Rapids forward Kevin Doyle and midfielder Marco Pappa were called up for International Duty by the Republic of Ireland and Guatemala respectively. Well, they are not the only two that were called up as it was announced today that Micheal Azira also got named to the provisional 30 man squad by the Ugandan National Team. From AllAfrica.com:
"Mike Azira has been active with Colorado Rapids. He recently had a man-of-the-match performance against LA Galaxy (which has Steven Gerrard), and I believe it's time to give him the chance at this stage" added Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic.
Uganda plays Burkina Faso in an AFCON Group D qualifier in Ouagadougou on March 26 before playing in Kampala on March 29.
This is terrific news for Azira and the Rapids. Having three players get called up for International Duty (and they would have had a fourth if not for the suspension of Jermaine Jones) is a sign that they are bringing in high quality players that ply their trade on the International Stage. It feels like it might be a new season in Commerce City and this is another one of those subtle signs that things are changing
From all of us here at Burgundy Wave, Congratulations to Azira on this call-up!!!!!
