2016 US Open Cup Format Revealed

We know (about) when the Rapids will enter the 103rd edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

United States Soccer announced on Friday the format for the 103rd edition of the US Open Cup and with that announcement we learn when the Colorado Rapids enter the tournament.  In 2015, Colorado Rapids defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 4-1 in the fourth round, but dropped a 1-0 result to Houston Dynamo in the fifth round.  The Rapids have made it to one US Open Cup Final, in 1999, where they lost 2-0 to Rochester Rhinos.

FIRST ROUND--MAY 11

Number of games--24

Number of teams Involved--48

Who:  Premier Development League (19 teams), National Premier Soccer League (15 teams) and Local Qualifiers (14 teams).  Harpo's FC enters the tournament at this stage as a local qualifier.

SECOND ROUND--MAY 18

Number of games--21

Number of teams involved--42

Who:  Winners of the 24 first round games and United Soccer League (18 teams).  Charlotte Independence and Colorado Springs Switchback FC enter the tournament at this stage.

THIRD ROUND--JUNE 1

Number of games--15

Number of teams involved:  30

Who:  Winners of the 21 second round games and North American Soccer League (9 teams).

FOURTH ROUND--JUNE 15

Number of games--16

Number of teams involved: 32

Who:  Winners of the 15 third round games are joined by Major League Soccer (17 teams).  Colorado Rapids enter the tournament at this stage.

ROUND OF 16--JUNE 29

Number of games--8

Number of teams involved--16

Who:  Winners of fourth round games

The quarterfinals will be played on July 20, semifinals on August 10 and the final on September 21.
