The United States Women's National Team takes to the pitch this afternoon in their second match of Olympic Qualifying this time against Mexico. On Wednesday night, the USA won 5-0 against Costa Rica in a match that was over after 13 seconds when Alex Morgan scored the first of her two goals on the evening.
The goal for tonight: win and make the semifinals
The Group A Table
Win | Loss | Draw | Points | Goal Differential | |
Mexico | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3 | +6 |
United States | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3 | +5 |
Costa Rica | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -5 |
Puerto Rico | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | -6 |
What to Watch For
1) A Test?--the USWNT were not challenged at all against Costa Rica and Mexico faced no resistance from Puerto Rico. This match should offer a greater test for both Mexico and the USWNT.
2) A Semifinal place--the top two teams from Group A will make the semifinal round and barring some sort of massive calamity, both of the teams should be in line for that round. And win that semifinal game, and you book your spot in the Rio Olympics. The USWNT will have a bit of pressure to get this done as soon as they can, and Mexico should be able to play freely. That being said, this should be a game that the USWNT wins.
