We all know that Axel Sjoberg is an all-star worthy center back. He was awarded with Defensive Player of the Year from the Colorado Rapids, and came in third for MLS Defender of the Year. It was announced today that Sjoberg was recognized for his amazing efforts this season by joining Matt Hedges (FC Dallas) and Jelle van Damme (LA Galaxy) for the top defenders in the 2016 Best MLS XI.
After battling a knee injury last season, Sjoberg’s goal for 2016 was “to stay healthy, just so I can prove the kind of player I am. As a center back it’s about being really consistent a lot of the time, and that’s what I pride myself on. I couldn’t do that last year when I was injured, so for me that was the main goal going into the season.”
Besides a wrist injury at Vancouver, Sjoberg was able to stay healthy this year, and was integral to the Rapids defense this season. While rumors surfaced of Swedish clubs Djugardens IF and Ostersunds FK looking into Sjoberg, there doesn’t seem to be any truth in that (at least not yet). I think I speak for everyone when I say that we want Axel to be a Rapid for a very long time.
